Fourth Wing Perfume Pairings: Fragrances Inspired by Storm, Shadow, Leather, and Dragons

Fourth Wing is full of scent-rich atmosphere: storm air, ozone, parchment, ink, worn leather, smoke, char, shadow, and lightning. This fragrance guide pairs the world of Basgiath, Xaden, Violet, and dragon fire with perfumes that capture the novel’s dark, elemental energy.

I make no apologies for today's post even though it's a bit of a departure.

I've been savouring my way through "Waterland" by Graham Swift because Tan Twan Eng made an Instagram post calling it "one of the greatest novels of the 20th century". That's a run-don't-walk situation. But for no clear reason I felt like I needed a break from it. So I picked up Fourth Wing...and read the entire thing--and both other novels in the series (so far)--in a matter of days.

Dragon riders winging through storm-charged air trailing smoke and dragonfire. Clashing elemental powers. Parchment, ink, leather, steel, shadow and lightning. This book is a master class in atmosphere. And lucky for us, Yarros writes for ALL the senses. Here we go:

Parchment, book-binding glue, and ink — Violet's description of the smell of the Archives.

Mint and leather, plus something “between citrus and floral” — Xaden’s scent.

Windswept stone — The treacherous Basgiath bridge.

Storm air / ozone — the clean, metallic smell that hits right before lightning breaks.

Smoke and char — dragon fire.

Worn leather — flight leathers. Who has a good drawing of what they imagine these look like?

Altogether not the easiest brief. Here's what I came up with:

Perfumes Inspired by Fourth Wing

1. Le Labo Baie 19
If I wanted to bottle the moment before a storm breaks over Basgiath, this is where I’d start. Le Labo describes Baie 19 as having a “crisp, wet, drenched effect” like water hitting earth after rain, with juniper berry, patchouli, and green leaves soaked through that luminous rainfall. It gives me wet stone, charged air, and the sense that lightning is somewhere very near. For the more elemental side of Fourth Wing, this is a strong contender.

2. Penhaligon’s Halfeti Leather
This one leans into the darker, more dangerous register: bergamot and spice up top, then a base of incense, leather, musk, and amber. It feels like authority, risk, and someone you probably should not trust but absolutely would follow into battle anyway. For me, this is the closest fit for the novel’s blend of discipline, menace, smolder, and military polish gone a little feral at the edges.

3. Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace
I know, this is the obvious “fire” choice — but sometimes obvious hits just right. Maison Margiela frames it around pink pepper, orange flower, chestnut accord, guaiac wood, cade oil, vanilla, and Peru balsam: smoke, wood, glowing embers, warmth. On paper that might sound too cozy for Fourth Wing, but I actually think the contrast works. There’s comfort here, yes, but it’s the kind of comfort that exists beside danger: warmth earned after lethal danger.

If I had to choose just one, I’d probably put Halfeti Leather in first place for the overall mood, with Baie 19 as the most convincing interpretation of the book’s storm-lashed atmosphere. But honestly? I think Fourth Wing may be one of those rare books that begs for layering: something rain-soaked and mineral underneath, with smoke or leather over top.

As always, I’d love to hear alternate picks. This one has plenty of room for interpretation, and I suspect there are at least three entirely different but equally convincing scent paths.
